Description 1.25 linear ft.
The collection is housed in three 5 inch archival boxes. The first box contains Anniversary Information (File 1), Announcements (files 2-3 and some in Box 3, File 10), Books (File 4), Calendars (File 5), and Miscellaneous items (File 6). The rest of the files in Box 1 are mailing packages that include poetry and mailings (Files 7-13). Box 2 contains some of the materials from the early years of the press when the Mikolowskis distributed their printed works for free (Files 1-3). The rest of the box (Files 4-12) are all subscription mailings. The subscription mailings continue into Box 3 (Files 1-9). The last box finishes with some extra ephemera, announcements and subscription forms. Some of the artwork is signed or postmarked, but for the most part everything is in its original condition.
Note Detroit natives Ken and Ann Mikolowski were a part of the creative community centered in Cass Corridor in and around Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Ken was a poet and Ann an artist. They became collaborators and purchased the letterpress of the Detroit Artists Workshop so they could print art and poetry in the basement of their home. In 1971 the Mikolowskis started sending out mailings on a subscription basis, they went out seasonally and included stickers, postcards, bookmarks and sometimes original art and poetry. Word about the Alternative Press spread and the original circle of friends expanded across the nation to included the work of Allen Ginsberg, Anne Waldman, Gary Snyder and Ted Berrigan among others.
Summary Collection includes: Announcements, books, calendars, mailing packages, mailings and ephemera.
